{11.7.2013} A Day in the Life

November 7th was one of the most popular activities of the year - A Day in the Life.  For this one evening each year, the tables are turned and professors teach the spouses instead of the students. This year did not disappoint!

Dan Snow, Associate Professor of Global Supply Chain Management, and Glenn Christensen, Associate Professor of Marketing, spent the evening making us laugh and teaching about Benihana, plastic, and mojo meters. :) Thank you both for your time!

{Arts & Letters} Creating Art for Your Home

Arts & Letters' October evening activity was all about art.
Rachel Callan discussed simple art projects people can make to decorate the walls of our homes.  Some of her suggestions include (copied and pasted from her handout, which is located on the MBASA Website in the Member's Only Section):

  1. Framing:  If you want a large canvas to cover your area there are two routes for finishing. You can frame it, or you can buy a canvas panel with a deep cradle (3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch). Framing a large painting can be expensive. I suggest going to a consignment shop, second-hand store or other discount store and find the biggest frame they have (at least 3 feet by 2 feet for a smaller room). Then, go to the hardware store and have a piece of Masonite or MDF cut to the size of the frame.
  2. Colors: Most people would pull colors from the space they plan to put the painting in. While blending with the space is good, don't choose colors that match your space perfectly. If you do, your masterpiece won't stand out. You don’t even have to include the colors of your room if you don’t want to. If your space is mostly neutral, get brave go bold! You may also want to consider choosing colors that you are fond of—this will help you enjoy your project more.
  3. Practice: Start small. Practice on a piece of paper first. Work on creating the textures and colors you want. If you plan on layering colors, do a test to see how it looks. This will give you some know-how and a plan when you start on the real painting.
  4.  Prime your board: Invest in some gesso or another primer to make your painting last longer and look better.
And if you need help figuring out what to paint, consider: Silhouettes, Repetition Paintings, Splatter Paintings, Stencils, or Inspirational/Motivational Art.

Kristen Buchanan taught us that everyone can be an artist and explained the evenings' projects.
Then we were set loose with acrylic paints, pastels, and colored pencils to create masterpieces.

Thank you Rachel, Kristen, and the Arts & Letters Committee for such a fun evening!

{Arts & Letters} SCERA Theater Field Trip and The Magical Adventures of Merlin

On October 30th the Arts & Letters Committee hosted a children's theater field trip to see The Magical Adventures of Merlin at the SCERA Theater.  Merlin retold the story of King Arthur pulling the enchanted Excalibur sword out of the stone to become king.

78 people attended and the kids were thrilled with the show's magic tricks including fire coming from actors' hands, smoke, falling books, and floating hourglasses.  Add in a snack from the theater, and a Q&A with the cast, and the field trip was an exciting and magical adventure for all involved.

We look forward to our next theater field trip in February!  Thank you Arts& Letters!

{Family Committee} Jakers Pumpkin Patch

It wouldn't be October with a visit to a pumpkin patch! Thanks to Bitsy for organizing such a great day! The weather was perfect, the pumpkins were ready to be carved and everyone had such a wonderful time! Jakers is such a great option because its free to go, you just pay for your pumpkins.
There is a 400lbs pig, a hay ride, a big slide or two, and a BIG corn box (similar to a sand box)

{Family Committee} Gardner Village Witch Scavenger Hunt

On a chilly October day, we all headed to Sandy and the famous Gardner Village. Why? Well, they have this crazy witch scavenger hunt and we did not want to miss out. We had fun finding all the different witches thoroughly enjoyed our hard-won chocolate chip cookies afterwards.
