Arts & Letters' October evening activity was all about art.
Rachel Callan discussed simple art projects people can make to decorate the walls of our homes. Some of her suggestions include (copied and pasted from her handout, which is located on the MBASA Website in the Member's Only Section):
- Framing: If you want a large canvas to cover your
area there are two routes for finishing. You can frame it, or you can buy a
canvas panel with a deep cradle (3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch). Framing a large
painting can be expensive. I suggest going to a consignment shop, second-hand
store or other discount store and find the biggest frame they have (at least 3
feet by 2 feet for a smaller room). Then, go to the hardware store and have a
piece of Masonite or MDF cut to the size of the frame.
- Colors: Most people would pull colors from the
space they plan to put the painting in. While blending with the space is good,
don't choose colors that match your space perfectly. If you do, your
masterpiece won't stand out. You don’t even have to include the colors of your
room if you don’t want to. If your space is mostly neutral, get brave go bold! You
may also want to consider choosing colors that you are fond of—this will help
you enjoy your project more.
- Practice: Start small. Practice on a piece of paper first. Work on creating the textures and colors you want. If you plan on layering colors, do a test to see how it looks. This will give you some know-how and a plan when you start on the real painting.
- Prime your board: Invest in some gesso or another primer to make your painting last longer and look better.
Kristen Buchanan taught us that everyone can be an artist and explained the evenings' projects.
Then we were set loose with acrylic paints, pastels, and colored pencils to create masterpieces.
Thank you Rachel, Kristen, and the Arts & Letters Committee for such a fun evening!
